Race and Ethnicity can seem like such a simple concept. It's perceived as where you're born or how you may appear. But it's actually a lot more than that. It's the culture in which you were raised in, and the traditions that are important to you. And the way that those things shape your whole experience, whether you're white, black, Asian, Latinx, indigenous, or any mixture that exists, everyone has a perspective that's unique to them, and only them. This impacts the way that you view the world and approach your problems. And we believe that our differences are bridges and not gaps. Racial and ethnic diversity is valuable, and it brings a refreshing perspective to the teams that were part of having a racially and ethnically diverse team means better problem solving. As varied life experiences bring different perspectives to the table: stable teams, understanding your co workers and team members creates sustainable relationships, which support long term vision, it can even help the bottom line, diverse companies generate 19% more revenue than their peers. The point is, businesses are better when everyone, regardless of skin color or background, are recognized as a valuable team members that they are. But even today, there are challenges in many organizations that drown out minority voices. And this is a major issue. The people we share meals with at lunch, those we sit next to on the bus ride home, or even the person you report to at work could be facing these challenges just because of the way that they look. And you need to ask yourself, is that happening in your office? And in this module, we'll talk about the challenges that minorities face, but we will also talk about the valuable perspective that diversity can bring, and most importantly, ways that we all can support. And I encourage you: if you truly believe that we're all human, and you see others facing challenges you've never experienced, practice empathy as if you had to face them yourself.
